Revolution OS eric raymond: author, the cathedral and the bazaar. linux has been the been windows newest and biggest competition. linux is a free open source software, there was 12 million usere in the 80' s, it is an alternative operating system to windows, it was developed by programmers on the net, and very well liked for its speed. Linus Torvalds:works on the kernel-thinks that the only use of an operating system is to help the programs that people want to use. OPEN source: a way for people to callaborate on software without having to negotiate with contracts and purchases in order to let the whole world use the software in order to be able to use and work with their operating system. Richard Stallman: worked at MIT and is the founder of the GNU project. the people were made to put passwords and the hackers were not happy with the regulations set on them. the homebrew computer club was made by many hackers in the silicone valley in order to pass around due to many different upsets with commercial software, richard stallman began to develop GNU operating system/ GNU is Gnu's Not Unix and was made in order to be able to share and not have to restrain themselves from sharing and helping with other people inthe computing and hacking community. gnu piblic license is a license a person can change and share.. att owned unix at the begining of the os era. ISP's liked the use of apache due to the amount of websited allowed to be run on one box. by the time of 1995, linux had 500000 users and 120000 different strings of code. by 1197 linux had 800000 lines of code and 3.5 million users. by 1999 linux had 12 million users. once red hat was sbegining t be a succesful program ...it gave linux a bit more of credibility due to the fact that it is about the same as linux. on june 22001 redhat its first quoted profit the next day at 487 per share. on june 2001 va linux announced it was exiting the computer sstems business due to mounting losses. the next day its stock opened at 2.61 per share.
